THE RUNNER (2009)
The Runner (2009)

Film Synopsis

A Runner reflects on his choices during the race of his life. As moments from his life flash before his eyes each misstep becomes evident. In the race for something more he seems to have forgotten what matters most. He is left with the choice to continue on to the bitter end, or find the power to start again.

About the production

The Runner is a deeply personal film chronicling my descent into the abyss of addiction and the loss of my family. I wrote the film in 2006 in the sixth month of my recovery, after finding extraordinary support in my personal life and the film community at the University of Texas at Arlington. The Runner tells the story of man who awakens to find that he has run from everything of meaning in his life. He finds himself lost and without his family, and is given the opportunity to begin his life again, with one condition, he must walk, not run. The Runner began preproduction in 2006 and principle photography started two and a half years later. The film remains close to my heart for several reasons, but the greatest of them all being its potential to help someone wrestling with addiction. It is my wish that by sharing my experience, strength, and hope, one suffering with addiction may relate and believe that there is a way out.

Testimonials

I found and watched the film “The Runner” with my boyfriend, who has been through a few rehabs, in hopes of delivering a message that would help modify his addictive behavior. He stated that, “The film’s sobering message touched him and was received loud and clear.” Best of all he has been clean and sober 90 days since. Wow, we cannot thank you enough Mr. Cormier.

SMILE (2010)
SMILE (2010)

Film Synopsis

A couple of angry young thugs play a meaningless game of “Kick the Can”, which leads them to brutally attack a homeless and seemingly defenseless Vietnam veteran. The veteran shares with them the secret that is his greatest weapon in life. The young men are left with the choice to let their hate lead them to the gates of prison and certain death, or learn to use the tool the older man teaches them.

About the production

Smile is a film inspired by an article telling of a homeless man being senselessly beaten by two men. The article sparked the idea that this man could possibly have something that these men were threatened by, something that disproved their response to the stimuli of their environment and socio-economic condition. These thoughts led to my remembering pictures of slaves I had seen in books smiling, something that always astounded me. That through the pains of great oppression one could find the power to smile, and how great a power that truly is, and how disarming it must be to those that seek to oppress us. This idea is basis of the film Smile; I offer the film with the hope that it might challenge one to find the smile within them.
